Pumpkin Picking: Balgone Estate

A newer family-run farm, Balgone Estate can be found on the east side of Scotland, near North Berwick.

Balgone was on my list to visit as they didn’t just have a pumpkin patch – they put on a spooky trail, you can wander around the amaizeing corn maze and there are lots of food trucks for when you’ve worked up an appetite heaving all the pumpkins to the car.

The patch

Balgone Pumpkin Patch has a beautiful backdrop – you can see North Berwick Law in the distance. I felt like I was in some autumn hallmark film! The patch wasn’t too muddy when I went but definitely bring a pair of wellies or shoes you can get mucky as it is a working farm.

A lovely big illustrated sign on the patch highlighted the different varieties that had been grown from your typical orange pumpkins to the green, warty and spooky pumpkins. There were piles of some of the more unique varieties and they had lots of teeny pumpkins too.

After the patch, I explored the ‘Amaizing Maze’ which I found fun so I’d imagine kids would have enjoyed it even more. The ticket for the car park includes access to everything on the farm – you’re not paying per person either just per car.

The Haunted Trail

Can you spot the witches?

I’m not going to lie, the Haunted Trail is what sold Balgone Estate to me. You might think it’s just for kids but to be honest, I really enjoyed it, and it made it feel like more of a day out. The walk isn’t long and you can spot spooky things as you walk around. There are no jump scares or anything too creepy, so it’s suitable for young kids. Halfway round, you can visit The Crooked Cauldron where you meet some (friendly) witches and toast marshmallows.
